Newport Beach — Suzanne Marques is at surf camp in Newport Beach Thursday, as Good Day LA continues its look at other types of camps you can send your kids to this summer. The camps are Mon-Fri, 8:30 am – 11:30 am and the students focus on improving their surfing with maneuvers, understanding the ocean and safety. The camps are sponsored by the city of Huntington Beach.

Keiki Camp Swim Test

When kids sign up for Aloha Beach Camp, our counselors want to know their swimming ability. So we enter the ocean together with the children to evaluate their swimming ability. It only takes a second or two. Some folks refer to this activty as a swim “test” but we hate that word so we don’t use it. It’s NOT a test because everyone passes, and as you can see, swimming in the ocean with a smile on your face is A LOT more fun than taking a test! So we call them swimming “evaluations,” and we make the activity fun for the kids. Here’s camper Ivana showing counselor Christina how well she can swim in the ocean. Aloha Beach Camp Swim Tests Aren’t Really Swim Tests At All!

Sometimes kids can be intimidated by what they consider Aloha Beach Camp’s “swim test.” Once they realize it’s not a test but instead just an evaluation, they usually feel more comfortable. Here’s how it works.

On your child’s first day of camp, we want to get an understanding of his or her swimming ability so we can maximize their safety and fun in the water. Our counselors evaluate each child individually, asking them to swim just a few yards in the ocean while we observe them. Since our counselors are lifeguards, we can make a very precise evaluation in seconds.

After your camper completes his or her swimming evaluation, they will be given a color-coded wristband. The color designates how deep they can go in the water. For example, if your child earns a green wristband, we will let them play in the wet sand with the ocean water coming up to their ankles.

For campers who earn a green wristband, they are permitted to swim where the ocean water comes up to their knees. And campers who get an orange wristband may swim where the water comes up to their waist. (This is the deepest anyone can go; even the most experienced camper swimmers are restricted to waist level depth and may not go deeper in the ocean than that.)
