I want to learn to surf so badly…?

September 18th, 2009 | by admin |

It has been a dream of mine to learn how to surf since I was little. I’m 16 going on 17 and still haven’t learned. I live in the middle of Ohio, nowhere near an ocean so what do I do? A summer camp? Work during the summer at a place near a place that teaches surfing? Any advice would be great.

a summer camp would be a great way to start. you could take one for a week, or even a weekend, just to get a taste, see if you like it and then plot your next move. since summer’s pretty much over maybe you could look for a camp that runs on the next long weekend or school holiday.

Do you have any relatives that live on the coast? Maybe you could spend the summer with them?
If not then surf camp is an option. Or, if you are willing to wait a little longer for your dream, pick a college or university that is reputable as well as right near the ocean! There are a lot of them on the west and east coast:

I know how you feel. I am a surfer, but I don’t live near the ocean (Though I wish I could!). I surf whenever I can, and I hope to go to a college by the sea and surf then. Also, I am going to save up my money for trips there. Maybe you should save enough money for a trip to the beach. A train and a hotel would probably be the cheapest for a longer weekend, and then stay at a place with a known beginner surf spot nearby, and maybe rent a soft-top longboard and take get educated about the basics, etc, or take lessons. In the meantime try finding a job there that your parents will let you work at, probably during the summer, so you can surf, and also try hunting down colleges near these places via your counselor.
    Good luck!

you should pass on it. it is really hard to do, and really easy to get hurt. i thought it would be more fun and was disappointed
