I guess an ideal campground is suited for a class C motorhome and I don’t care about what the near/onsite activities are. I have read that at leo Carrillo there is good hiking and so forth, that sounds interesting, but I am looking for a place that my best friend and I could spend well over a week enjoying nothing but sun and sea. I hope I conveyed the message.

Try the Malibu Beach RV Park, it sure worked for my wife & I! It’s right on the Pacific Coast Hwy and you can check it out at www.maliburv.com

My son is camping with my Grandmother about 4 hours away from where I am. Last night, something bit him on his arm and it’s since then swelled up to about a 3 inch radius. This morning, he felt nauseus and my Granmother just called telling me he’s feverish and feeling really ill, so she’s packing up and bringing him back to her house, which is another three hours from where I am. She plan on bringing him to the doctor or the emergency room as soon as she gets there, depending on if he’s the same or worse. My question is, does anyone know what could have bit him for him to have this reaction? They were camping at a campground, digging in the sand and swimming in the ocean in lower Connecticut.

From the sounds of his symptoms it seems like he got bit by a spider. He really should see medical personnel before they begin travelling just incase he starts to get worse. Some of the symptoms seem like it’s a black widow spider bite, but I don’t think that’s possible in Connecticuit. They really shouldn’t waste time travelling back to her house, she should take him to the closest first-aid station or emergency room for treatment. Good Luck!

Question 1

Two bicyclists, starting at the same place, are riding toward the same campground by different routes. One cyclist rides 1280 m due east and then turns due north and travels another 1830 m before reaching the campground. The second cyclist starts out by heading due north for 1480 m and then turns and heads directly toward the campground. (a) At the turning point, how far is the second cyclist from the campground? (b) What direction, measured as a positive angle relative to due east, must the second cyclist head during the last part of the trip?

Question 2
A person is standing at the edge of the water and looking out at the ocean. The height of the person’s eyes above the water is h = 1.9 m, and the radius of the Earth is R = 6.37 x 106 m. (a) How far is it to the horizon? In other words, what is the distance d from the person’s eyes to the horizon? (Note: At the horizon the angle between the line of sight and the radius of the earth is 90°.)

Katina, where is the calculus? these are trig questions. but I will attempt to answwer them anyway.
if you scketch this you get:

1830-1480 = 350 m North
1280 m East
is what the second cyclist has to cover when heading directly towards the camp at an angle whose tangent = 350/1280
so heading is 15.29 degrees north of East.
for a distance of :
1280²+350²=D²
√(1280²+350²)= D
D ≈ 1327 m

2. The distance to horizon = DH
Earths radius = rE
DH²+rE²=(rE+1.9)²
DH²=(rE+1.9)² – rE²
DH = √[(6.37 x 10⁶+1.9)² - (6.37 x 10⁶)²]
DH ≈ 4920 m

Are there any campgrounds in california (southeren perfered) that campgrounds are on the beach or right by or close to the ocean ? are there any you recomend? thanks!

Lindsay M, though you live in Minnesota I hope you enjoy your stay when you come out to Ca. In mission bay in san diego on the bay are a few camping grounds, in San Elijo the State Park, in Carlsbad, San Onofre, Leo Carrillo, El Capitan and Refugio all are also State Parks. Reservations need to be made well in advance as the rigors of the Ca,. lifestyle gives cause to certain people that overwhelming need to re create and many do so camping. All these places are my favorites because I am into the ocean (in every way) but then if you have a motor home or a self contained trailer there are many many more. For fishing leo Carrillo, and refugio get one thousandth the pressure. For surfing all of them but san onofre at different times hold overhead height waves with refugio the best then leo Carrillo second both break a right around a corner. Also, there is a dry (in summer) river bed up the canyon behind the campgrounds (into the Santa Monica mountains) at leo Carrillo. About two miles in (watch out for the poisen oak) there are magnificent pools, waterfalls and huge rock formations to sun on and dive off of. At Refugio the water is so clear snorkling is as good as it gets and I am sure you too will find it one of the nicest places in the world just walking the low tide shoreline. Happy New Year.

Thanks!

There is one about 10 miles before you get to Hermit Island that accommodates RVs. It however is not on the water. You still have to drive 10 minutes or so to get to the ocean.
We usually camp at Hermit Island every year but this summer we had a puppy and as Hermit Island no longer allows pets we stayed at Meadowbrook campground. It was OK (no Hermit Island though).

Here is their website:
