Where can I go camping on the beach in the US?

October 11th, 2009 | by admin |

I’m looking for a place in the United States where I can camp on an a beach. I’m talking about the ocean, not a lake or river beach. We’re planning our road trip in September, so I’d like to find a place where the temperature will be hot in early fall. Probably the southern half of the US. I’m in Wisconsin, so I can get anywhere in the US in about twenty four hours. Any suggestions?

you are in wisconsin, so you have to decide if you want to deal with trying for weeks and weeks of hours on the phone dialing and redialing to a busy signal (must be 6 months in advance) trying to get a camping reservation for any of the beaches in this state…..Plus there are those millions of camping goons, idiots, screaming kids, crying babies, barking dogs, parents calling their kids for breakfast, lunch and dinner because that is what you will get out here in california….. or whether you want the slow and easy retired life style of going on a cruise to the Caribbean and snorkel everywhere the ship docks, great meals, all you can eat, day in day out, ship security, fun things on board to do even dancing classes and karaoke at night. big shows chocolate, drinking, more drinking and even more drinking and partying….

Fort Desoto Park has some really nice camping spots that are pretty private (yes its a beach) and theres a Park down in St Augustine that is also right on the beach, cant think of the name right now sorry. Both of those places are in Florida- Ft. Desoto being on the Gulf (it was also ranked the 4th nicest beach in the US back in 2000 i believe) and St. Augustine being on the east coast. Down in the keys theres John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo, Florida. Their campgrounds are ok but the majority of the park is underwater and contains reefs, its the first underwater state park. I`m sure there are plenty of places to camp in the keys.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a National Protected Seashore. There are campgrounds there and there is not a lot of development.

There are several beaches in California, I recommend Manresa / Sunset Beach near Santa Cruz.

I camped at False Cape State Park in Virginia, just north of N. Carolina. I was there an April 08, the weather was good then and should be warm there in fall too. You need a reservation, which you can get through Reserve America, and it costs about $10/ night. You get outhouses and potable water near the sites. It is nice and secluded there, no crowds, no motor vehicles allowed. The price you pay for this seclusion is a 6-8 mile hike in, it’s all on flat terrain with nice scenery, took me 3-4 hours. Good luck finding a cool place.
