A place that is in your driving timing but is not right on the beach......

First Landing State Park has campsite that are behind the dunes that front a Chesapeake Bay swimming beach. There are some sites that are open to the dunes and you may have a little bit of a view of the Chesapeake. There are fire rings at each site but I would hold off on the fireworks. There is a park police officer that doesn't seem to sleep.

A big plus about this place, that can perhaps make up for not being right on the beach, is that you are not far from Virginia Beach. You could spend part of your day and/or evening there. Enjoy the wide sandy beach and the ocean in Virginia Beach, have access to the seaside bars and restaurants, and have a campsite that is not far away.

You could also check out Assateague. I have never been there so I can't make any recommendations.

I hope you find a good place to go and have a great time!
References :
http://www.first-landing-state-park.org/
